  • Butter(no substitutes)
    1/2cup
  • Sugar
    1 1/2cup
  • Eggs
    2large
  • Cocoa
    1tbsp
  • Vanilla
    1tsp
  • Baking Soda
    1/2tsp
  • Buttermilk(or milk & 1 tsp vinegar)
    1cup
  • Red Food Coloring
    2oz
  • Salt
    1tsp
  • Flour
    2 1/2cups
  • White Vinegar
    1tsp

A classic southern red velvet cake with buttermilk.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large glass bowl cream butter and sugar.
  3. Add eggs, cocoa and vanilla. Stir well.
  4. In another glass bowl combine buttermilk, red food coloring and salt.
  5. Mix alternately with flour. Stir well after each addition.
  6. In a measuring cup combine vinegar and baking soda. Stir to mix.
  7. Fold mixture into batter. Combine thoroughly.
  8. Pour batter into 2-9 inch or heart shaped greased and floured cake pans.
  9. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes.
  10. Cool thoroughly before frosting.
